Audrey Hepburn
From 2 July to 18 October the National Portrait Gallery in London will host a photography exhibition celebrating the British actress and style icon Audrey Hepburn.

Inspired by the exhibition, we have searched our archive for some of our most loved photographs of the unforgettable Hepburn, who to this day is best known for her role as the elegant and eccentric Holly Golightly in "Breakfast at Tiffany's". But behind the world of glamour lies a lesser-known story of struggle and hardship which began in childhood.

Hepburn's parents were a Dutch baroness and an English banker who separated before the start of the Second World War. When Britain declared war on Germany, Audrey and her mother relocated to the Netherlands. After the Netherlands were invaded by Germany in 1940, Audrey was forced to adopt the pseudonym Edda van Heemstra in order to conceal her British origin which could have put her in danger.

Yet despite the initial struggles in her life, Hepburn never lost a positive outlook: "If my world were to cave in tomorrow, I would look back on all the pleasures, excitements and worthwhilenesses I have been lucky enough to have had. Not the sadness, not my miscarriages or my father leaving home, but the joy of everything else. It will have been enough."
