70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings
The Normandy Landings, often called the D-Day Landings, involved more than three million Allied service personnel as part of the campaign “Operation Overlord” to liberate Western Europe from German occupation during World War II.
The images in our selection capture the anticipation, precision, meticulous planning and sheer force in numbers involved; yet also the anxiety and tension that predominated the lead-up to the operation. Winston Churchill is said to have told his wife on the eve of the landings: “Do you realise that by the time you wake up in the morning twenty thousand men may have been killed?”
It was seventy years ago this month that this momentous operation, the largest amphibious invasion in world history, brought Europe one step closer to peace.
