Gerhard Richter / German painter and sculptor.
born 09.02.1932 in Dresden.
Studied at the Art Academy in Dresden and after his escape from the DR in 1961 at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf.
His first solo exhibition was in 1964 at gallery Friedrich & Dahlem in Munich. Frequent guest of Documenta in Kassel. Numerous solo exhibitions in Germany and abroad, most recently in the Kunstmuseum Bonn (2018) and in the Museum Barberini in Potsdam (2018). Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2002). Received numerous awards, including the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale (1997).
His most famous works include the “RAF Cycle (1988)”, the cycle “Birkenau (2014)” and the Cologne Cathedral Window (2006). In his second marriage Richter was married to the sculptor Isa Genzken. Since 1995 he is married to the painter Sabine Moritz. Richter lives in Cologne.
