Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840)
Caspar David Friedrich was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century, after being almost forgotten in his own liftime. Today he is considered to be the most important painter of German Romanticism and his paintings have an almost magical beauty as well as a dark melancholy.
This year sees the 175th anniversary of the great artist's death on 7 May.
