Weimar Berlin
Christopher Isherwood's Berlin stories Mr Norris Changes Trains and Goodbye to Berlin examine life in the German capital as the decay of Nazism sets in. Isherwood was first attracted to Berlin by the promise of decadence, freedom and sex, and Weimar culture was particularly chaotic and exciting in Berlin. Although many of the intellectuals and artists who moulded cultural life in Berlin were forced to flee with the rise of Hitler, and many more died under Nazi rule, vintage photographs from the period capture some of the vibrancy and modernity of Berlin in the late 1920s and the 1930s. We present a selection.
