October 2017: 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's 'Ninety-Five Theses'
October 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's 'Ninety-Five Theses':
'The Ninety-five Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences', written by Martin Luther in 1517, are widely regarded as the catalyst for the Protestant Reformation. They challenged the teachings of the Catholic Church on the nature of penance, the authority of the pope and the usefulness of indulgences.
It was on 31st October 1517, that Martin Luther nailed a copy of his 'Ninety-Five Theses' to the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. The theological debate that ensued led to the birth of Protestantism.
