On 31 May 1915, a German Zeppelin airship appeared for the first time in London's night sky. 28 people were killed in the attack, with another 60 being wounded.

First flown commercially by Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-AG, Zeppelins were generally used as bombers and scouts by the German military during the First World War and proved highly successful.

One hundred years on, we take a look at the Zeppelins in our archive.
