"Velvet Revolution" in Czechoslovakia
On 17 November 1989, the communist regime violently repressed a student demonstration. As a sign of protest, people out on the streets and demonstrations as well as strikes began throughout the country. At the end of this "revolution", which lasted from November 16 to December 29, the communists gave up power. The plurality of political parties was reestablished and Václav Havel, who had led the negotiations with the Communists, was elected President of the Republic.
