Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 - 1938)
Kirchner, creator of some of the key works of Modernism and one of the most important representatives of German Expressionism and co-founder of the artist group
, put an end to his life with two shots on 15 June 1938. He was persecuted by the Nazis and defamed as a 'degenerate artist', with more than 600 of his works being removed from various museums in Germany in 1937. In desperation and disappointment, the artist, disturbed by illness and his morphine addiction, chose suicide.
'Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Imaginary Travels' is the title of the exhibition curated by Art Center Basel in cooperation with the Kirchner Museum Davos. It runs from 15 November 2018 to 17 February 2019 at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.
