After receiving a doctorate from St. Petersburg University, Metch– nikoff began research into immunology. He noted that starfish contained mobile cells that engulfed and destroyed foreign bodies and named them phago– cytes. Observing that the blood of vertebrates also contains phagocytes, he suggested that the cells helped to fight infection. Metchnikoff took a post as a director at the Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1887. He later investigated the causes and effects of aging and promoted the consumption of yoghurt for good health.
