Nur Bild anzeigenAratea, Cygnus Constellation, 9th CenturyThe swan of the constellation Cygnus. Each page of the Aratea has a poem on the bottom half, written by the 3rd century BC poet Aratus and translated into Latin by Cicero, describing a constellation. The constellation is drawn above the poetry constructed with words taken from Hyginus’ Astronomica. The passages used to form the images describe the constellation which they create, neither the words or images would make full sense without the other to complete the scene. NOTE: red dots show where the stars appear in the sky.
